On Leaving the Sticks and Bricks

Not really an RV Lifestyle question, per se, but I figure you folks will have some experience and thoughts to help with this.

Over the Christmas/New Year's holiday Mrs. S. and I will be heading out for two weeks visiting family in FL and in NC. Our S&B home is in western New York State where it is not unusual to have bitter cold that time of year.

I will, obviously, leave the furnace on at a moderate temp (50 to 55 degrees or so). But I don't want to worry about the possibility of an extended power outage or furnace malfunction.

Should I turn off the water, drain the pipes, and put pink stuff in the traps?

Any other arrangements I should make for a two-week absence in the heart of winter?

Thanks,

  • We always turn off the main water valve, at the water meter, just after the supply line enters the house. You don't need a power loss to have water problems, an old water heater can leak and pour water in the area while you are away.
  • Check with your house insurance. They may have some rules to keep insurance valid. Varies from company to company
  • When we leave our Adirondack cottage in January, usually not returning again until April, we shut off the water pump and just relieve the pressure in the lines. The water heaters are also shut off and the furnace thermostat is set at 50 deg.F. We monitor the inside temp with two AcuRite AcuLink temperature/humidity linked sensors that will alert us to conditions outside of the parameters we've set. We can also check the sensors at any time online. Our two daughters live near by and check on the place periodically. Propane for the furnace is on automatic delivery, and our daughters let us know the tank level from time to time, so we can compare it to what the dealer's website thinks we have and correct if necessary. For a two week trip I don't see a need for all of that though. Just shutting off the water and heater, relieving the pressure, and turning down the thermostat should be enough. If you have a neighbor or relative that can keep an eye on the place, it wouldn't hurt.

    And have a great trip!
