IBcarguy,
Our experience over the last 52 years is that the West Coast states (mainly California) has this vast problem so much more than the rest of the USA or Canada. Coastal CG's are always popular and California is no exception. California has far fewer CG sites per capita of the population having RV's or even tents than anyother region we've seen. California, for instance, is very seriously lacking!
Great analysis, especially from a non-Californian.
California has been like this way before other states started having reservation issues.
Like I said, it's been bad for years.
One big factor is the lack of the state parks budget year after year.
It has been cut and under-funded to the point that infrastructure has crumbled and very few campsites have been added over decades.
So the population has exploded with only a handful of additional new sites to choose from.
It's no wonder that competition has gotten out of hand.
This is the reason we chose to avoid summers and holiday weekends, in the many years we lived and camped in both NorCal and SoCal.
We do still camp there, to visit family and friends.
Oregon state parks, on the other hand, is a shining example of how a state parks department should be run and funded.
