Why limit yourself to state parks? There's gotta be lots of private CGs within striking distance from Portland.
Believe it or not there are lots of people who will not consider private campgrounds for a whole host of reasons, most of which is being packed in like sardines, myself included.
Well, you need to come out to the west coast! The majority of the Thousand Trails CGs we've been to have sites spaced well apart. Being older CGs, I guess they weren't all that concerned back then about getting the most $$ they can out of a parcel of land. Some of them you can't see or hear your neighbors and it's like you're in your own private CG. A few have fantastic views over valleys and the ocean. Being members, we only pay annual dues and nothing per night. We don't have to put up with the noisy/obnoxious riff-raff you sometimes get in public CGs. I'll take a T/T CG any day over the private CGs or state parks we've seen.
Having said that, we stayed in a T/T on the WA coast that used to be a fish camp T/T bought out and it was originally laid out for boat trailers and when you flip your steps out, they end up on your neighbor's site. Howdeeee neighbor... :)
