If you get the right type of rug specifically made for outdoor use, they pass enough light and air and will not kill the grass. Here is a picture of our site in Frisco, NC after picking up the rugs after a weeklong stay. The grass was actually greener where the rungs were.
Ours are blue and white reversible woven polyethylene mats sold by "Fireside" through Amazon. We have a large one and a small one so we have some flexibility ....
