Overlanding as the New RV'ing
There is a definite significant rise in the interest and participation in Overlanding.
Overlanding is the idea of travel for travels sake usually doing an entire continent or around the world.
Thousands of people from many countries are doing this kind of RV travel all the time in vehicles that run the gamut from Toyota Pickups to Giant MAN Expedition vehicles and everything in Between.
At the same time in the last few years many new Overland or Expedition publications are seen on newstands. This is definitely a growing trend.
If you have been to the Baja or Mexico you will have seen a great number of these folks and can see them making their way up to Alaska and all the way up from or down to the tip of South America or on their way around the world.
This may become the new wave of RV travel for a more adventurous and less provincial RV'er than the current crop. While in Todos Santos Baja last year I met an American guy, ex state police executive, who told me his story...He had built a very nice retirement home on a lake settled down into blissful retirement and was BORED stiff. He sold the house and bought a used Dodge Cummins Pickup Pre- UlSd and had a custom Expedition Camper made for it. He went through that dodge and spared no expense. He was ready for anything it was clear. He was off to South America...and then who knows
I met many of these folks in my travels and one thing they share is an openness, a true sense of adventure and a willingness to put stereotypes behind them and set out for places many will not even think of going.
My guess is we will see a lot more of this in the next few years. How about you would you be up to the challenge? Does this type of travel interest you? If it does check out some of the Overlanding and Expedition sites. IF only for the pics.
