Deb and Ed M,
Naa, don't have to use the "C" to pull your Kayak trailer as you can have the best of both worlds and pull it behind the 5th wheel. In Michigan, you'll have to go to the license bureau and take the simple test to get an "R" on your driver's license. "R" is for "Recreational Double Towing". Michigan and most of the states you will travel in allow double towing.
My wife's license even has the "R" like mine. Here's how it went down. I had to go down to renew the truck license plate and asked the clerk about getting an "R". The clerk handed me the form and said to sit down and take the test and then come back to the counter which I did. 100% and so I asked for a pamphlet for my wife, which she gave me. Went home and handed it to my wife and said: "Read this as you have a test in an hour"! The looks she gave me were "precious" but read she did. Went down and took the test and also 100% and she got her "R". She laughs about it now but didn't think it was funny when I handed her the pamphlet.
We always do everything together as it's our way and neither of us want's to be left behind and it's worked great and happily for over 52 years so far! The only thing she nixed was when I mentioned my getting a pilot's license and buying a Cessna Turbo Centurion 210 RG 6 place airplane. She wanted NO part of piloting a plane!!! So I didn't get the license either and it's never bothered me in the least. Probably because I've flown all over the country etc for years and usually not on commercial flights for so many years that I now detest flying. Much rather RV or boat!
Why the hurry to get the "R"? We had quickly (spur of the moment, our way) decided to take a trip up to Indian River near the Straits (Burt Lake SP) with the 5th wheel rather than the TC as the one personal truck we had at the time was setup for the 5th wheel. BUT, weren't licensed to double pull with the boat trailer behind the 5'er and wanted to do the Inland Waterway in the boat. I had to renew my truck plates anyway. Problem solved! DUH, all's well that ends well!
