I don't know that laptops are necessarily more durable than desktops, but they aren't too fragile, particularly if you get well-built ones. There is a big range available, and some of the cheap ones are really cheaply constructed (physically speaking).
Laptops in my experience typically don't last as long as desktops before they break, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that they're moved around and manhandled a whole lot more frequently than the desktop computers. Plugging a nice big monitor into a laptop for desktop use is certainly practical and reasonable.
