I agree with your thought, Shakyjay. This mythical park ranger story is repeated a lot, but no one seems to identify him or her.
(Just a minor point, by the way. It was the Washington Times, not the Post, credited in an earlier post with the anonymous ranger quote. The Times was created in the 1980s by the conservative Reverend Moon from South Korea, and its editorial positions are generally conservative.)
Anytime you read a "quote" that does not provide the name of the person speaking, in this case the supposed park ranger, you are either dealing with sloppy reporting or made-up quoting. That's Journalism 101. People have been fired for that at newspapers of all leanings in the past. But these days, editorial standards are going down the drain.
