Fact is they don't collect on EVERYTHING. Even if you go over your exemption, as long as it's a reasonable amount, they'll send you on your way. Even on same day trips where there really is NO exemption amount, we have rarely been asked to pay, and we get groceries, clothes, etc., whenever we do.
If they don't ask, don't tell. They'll ask you the value of all the goods you bought there that's coming back, you give them, just as an example, $2000. If there are three of you (children are included) and your exemption is $800/each (totalling $2400), it's very likely that he won't ask you what the most expensive thing you bought is. If he doesn't, don't volunteer it, and you're on your way. If he does, just be honest about it and he's even likely to wave you through. They're not there to nickel and dime you about a couple of hundred dollars of value, of which what you'll pay is relatively small.
