Living on the Canada/US border for 25 years and being an active EBay customer I can tell you that if the custom official wants to get involved a lot of things can happen. I have - paid GST on a birthday card I bought in the USA even when that was all I had to declare, 30 min. and lots of paperwork for a few cents - had them refuse to combine exemptions for an item no matter how the bill is written - refuse to allow an item in until I showed them it was CSA approved. So I have learned to ask before leaving and then if they wave me through it is a bonus. And things can get much worse if you "forget" to declare something.
