That is a nice try but will NOT work. Just be honest and claim it. All you are looking at is 5% GST if you bring it into Alberta. They will subtract the $800.00 for your exception and you pay on the difference and if you are lucky the agent may well allow you to combine your wife's as well. But say you spent $1500.00 on the purchase less $800.00 the amount you would pay is $35.00. In my mind that is just not worth it being dishonest and just maybe getting caught which then changes the whole picture. It pays to be honest when crossing the border unless you do not care about ever crossing again.
