Paying to dump

The other day I was told $10 over the phone when I got there I was told $20. She said she $10 was last years rate and she could charge me for a nights stay. There wasn't anyplace near by that was convenient so I paid the $20. Really annoying. Thanks for listening.

we dump at the wastewater treatment plants in Manchester and Concord for free (see the list at the link above!)

I had checked the websites. We were cutting across from Lebanon, NH to just north of Plymouth, NH (exit 31 on I-93). Went to campground in Ashland to dump so I wouldn't have to unhook the Jeep.

At $20 it starts to get tempting to just dump it anywhere...how's capitalism working in that scenario? I'm not saying I'd ever do it, but there are people out there that will.

The people who own the dump station have not thought that far ahead. All they know is they want $20 for you dump and put more money in their pocket. If they continue, they will eventually price themselves out of the market and wonder what happened. As for those who dump illegally, they are always there. Everyone is busy looking out for themselves
  • Keep in mind the places with dump stations have some overhead costs due to the dump station:
    > Permit fees paid to the city and county
    > Routine Maintenance & repairs
    > Roto Rooter fees when it gets clogged which happens often
    > Pump out costs if it's a septic system
    > Macerator pump and electric fees (many counties now require maceration of the waste to reduce volume coming in to the waste treatment plants)
    > Hazardous waste clean up supplies for spills

And just like everything else these costs keep going up.

No doubt! Tell me there aren't people running dyed off road diesel in their trucks too! Those same people were illegally dumping their waste tanks when the price was $10 :S

  • Capitalism :B They can charge what the market will bare.

Actually I can't complain. My fiver stays at a campground without services. Once a week a tanker comes through, and if you want dumped they hook up and pump you out. Was $10, just went up in May to $15. I don't have to do anything but stand there and watch the guy, and wonder how bad his job must suck.
  • In the last few years it keeps going up. Used to pay $5 then it went to $10 and before long I am sure I will be paying $20. I have a small gas station that has a dump station that I like to use but certain times of the day it is tough to get in and out of. All they require is a purchase from the mini-mart so I get a pack of gum:) No I usually will get some milk and beer as the home fridge is empty. I try to keep trading with them so they will keep the dump station open.
  • This charge, was it for dumping at a place you were not staying at? If you were not then there should be a charge. I am not familiar with prices for this but
if you need to dump you need to dump at any cost.
