I think they write that on the box to cover themselves should someone use an inadequately rated extension cord and start a fire. If they try to sue the manufacturer then the manufacturer refers back to the instructions and notes that the user violated the instructions.

I would suggest getting a GOOD outdoor extension cord and monitor for heat periodically and you will be fine.
