Remember that when we do get our cold spell, it is also wet. It chills you right thru your clothes. It can feels worse outside than a dry cold at 30 degrees lower. Being trapped inside is still a bore.
I'll tell you where it's also "darn near intolerable" in the summer. I just spent a large part of the summer in central Arkansas before coming to central Fl 2 months ago. I'd never ran the A/C as much anywhere as in central Ar. Temps and humidity were simply ghastly. The beautiful countryside somewhat made up for the temps, but not quite! LOL
