Yes he had a mike. He would announce his call letters and location then do his thing. Is that ham or shortwave? The squealing while he modulated from high to low and back I assumed was shortwave.
The wire he shot up in the tree had a string-rope attached to the other end that he tied back to the trailer to keep tension on the wire. He also had a what looked like a separate 12V battery system to power it.
RoyB, what I was suggesting was if you cannot use a headset or be respectable then yes leave it at home.
Since we are avid hikers and spent little time around the trailer during the day we were subjected it between 7-11 PM.
