Pls respect Canadian laws

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/sudbury/florida-couple-self-isolation-charges-1.5648703

Staff Sgt. William McMullen says a 68-year-old and 70-year-old were charged with failure to comply with Section 58 of the Quarantine Act, which puts limitations and conditions on entrance into Canada.

They were also each issued a Provincial Offence Notice that includes a fine of $1,000. The maximum penalty if convicted is $750,000 and/or six months in prison.

  • Well... "Were they only food shopping for while they were "attending" their seasonal property?"... this is part of the problem.

When we came home from Florida we didn't go shopping for 14 days because we cared about those we would be exposing to whatever we may have picked up in our travels through the entire East Coast. Food shopping is not quarantining, no matter how you look at it. Our friends stepped up and delivered things we needed to our home. IMHO these folks should have made arrangements to have supplies delivered or simply stayed put instead of putting others at risk.

  • One was a Canadian citizen, who, you would assume is familiar with the area and the requirements or at least knew how to find those requirements.
North Bay is a fair sized town/city. Not being snarky, but the article doesn't say what they were doing that caused the arrest. Were they only food shopping for while they were "attending" their seasonal property? Did they have another option? I don't know if delivery is an option in smaller towns in that area or if their "seasonal property" is someplace that delivery becomes an option. Not enough information in the article to make a judgement.

They were very lucky they were merely charged with failing to abide by the quarantine requirements.

When crossing they would have had to agree to those requirements as a condition of entry, failing to comply could have resulted in them being escorted back to the border and told they were not welcome back for 5 years.

So broad are the government reactions to this virus. From fines and prison time in Canada to New Mexico telling visitors to quarantine with no obvious enforcement to Tucson where masks are required to Missouri where there are no restrictions other than a request to social distance. And they all think they are right.

You have hit the issue. Most counties in the developed world have managed to get the number of cases down to the point they can trace who has been exposed, so they open schools and business. (last I looked, Canada has only 20% as many cases as at peak. New Zealand has no cases) US number of cases is increasing at a increasing rate.
  • The border is closed to non essential traffic so i would think anyone crossing the border is fully aware of the protocol.
  • Sounds like a potential income stream for canuckle land. I’d say tell anyone who want to break the rules come on up and spin the wheel!

  • And at that age they are the ones in the most danger! Some people! And those are the ones that probably want the younger kids to stay home!
