Use SurgeGuard religiously. Only thing drawing til the relay kicks on (2 min?) is timer and test circuitry, so minimal amperage,no arc. Beware, though, the SurgeGuard can test good and pass power after the timer times out,and the recep can still burn your plug under load. You should always check the condition of the plug-in regardless. If tension on plug prongs is very sloppy, it may well burn your plug. I had to replace the plug end on the SurgeGuard early this season. The kids (ground crew) don't check like I do. They plug and go.
Another tip, along with turning the breaker off till you're connected, is to push the plug in and out several times before sending power. This removes some of the prior corrosion and establishes a better connection before current is passed. A shot of contact cleaner might be a good idea too.
