after trying a bunch of radios, myself and our motorcycle club standarized on radios from standard horizon. currently when we get new ones it the HX400. they are rugged, waterproof, true 5W output with an optional 1/4 and 1/2 wave antenna.
normally they are used in marine applications, but it is easy peasy to reprogram them to use the 5 MURS channels for onshore use. along with it they can tune all the weather service channels.
we use them between cars in caravans since many places we travel have no or spotty cell service for many miles. also use them around the campground. can use an external mic and/or earphone, and battery will usually last at least a full day with normal use. then recharge in a few hours.
Not the cheapest around, but if you want quality, well it comes at price.
