Couple of thoughts... Guns are pretty much illegal in Maryland. The political left feels as though guns are horrible. Therefore it is almost impossible to get a concealed carry in Maryland and we do not have reciprocity with concealed carry permits in other states. I don't agree with the premise at all. I feel that a competent person with a handgun is a good thing to have in spades.
That being said, it sounds like the officer was conducting an investigation. I don't know why the vehicle was stopped or how the officer learned that the driver was a gun owner... but he was conducting a legal investigation. He got information from the wife that contradicted the information from the driver. For whatever reason, the husband and wife gave conflicting information. The wife advised the officer that her husband was committing a crime, that crime being illegal possession of a concealed deadly weapon. The officer then had probable cause to believe a crime was occurring and had a right to search the driver, occupants and vehicle.
The law sucks. I don't support the law. I think law abiding citizens should be able to meet reasonable criteria and carry a weapon. I don't make the laws and the liberal left that rules Maryland doesn't agree with me. At the end of the day it sounds as though the officer did the right thing ACCORDING TO THE LAW.
Its unfortunate, because the driver had not committed any criminal offense... however the officer had probable cause to believe that the driver had committed the offense because the wife advised she thought the gun was in the car. It sounds like an honest mistake by the wife, but legal actions by the officer.
