Problem Using Out of State Credit Card at Pump

We travelled out west from Kentucky a few years ago and every once in awhile the pump would refuse my CC and direct to see the clerk inside. Only happened a few times but it was annoying. Now I don't seem to have any trouble the last couple of years.
