Produce inspection California

Hope to travel into California next winter
Need information re produce inspection.
Is the rules the same for all of California or do different areas have different restrictions.
Is there any where to go online to find out what the restrictions are?

  • The easiest way to deal with the California Agricultural Inspection stations is to plan to have little or no produce with you when entering California. Then make your purchases. No issue then.
  • If you google California fruit inspection you'll find a state PDF that shows what is and isn't allowed and it matters where you're coming from. Canada may be more restrictive. The western US is less restrictive than if you're coming from the midwest or back east.

For us the restriction amounted to avoiding citrus fruits, cherries and whole walnuts (in shell).
  • To be safe, Keep the grocery store receipts of fruits and vegetables. sometimes they care, sometimes they don't.
  • When we stopped for inspection, we told them we had a little lettuce and avocado in the fridge.
They told us we were ok.
    No inspection needed.
I guess if you had produce at room temps, could be a different story.
