Propane Tank - News To Me

So, got a tank filled yesterday and was informed it is out of certification. The guy said cert is for 12 yrs new, re-cert is for 10. He said Amerigas could probably re-cert, about $20. Lucky for me, he went ahead and filled it.

Thought I'd share, anybody run into this?

  • If you have a 20# cylinder, just take it to one of the Blue Rhino or Amerigas exchange places and swap it.

Originally they are 12 years and I think the recertification is only for 5 years.
  • I understand the reason very well as I am pressure vessel guy:) Just didn't know about this, never owned any refillable tanks before.

Think I got the newer style, tank is collar-dated 07-01, not sure about the other, but probably the same. They got the overfill protection device.

Been thru a re-cert? Any big deal?
  • Yes. They go by the date on the collar. It's supposed to prevent tank explosions by not allowing rusted out tanks to be refilled.
  • My bet your 12 year old tank might even have the old style valve. If so, the valve will need to be replaced before they will even re-cert your tank...

Probably cheaper to just replace the tank.
