I've seen warnings about cell phones and gas pumping at almost every station I've been to. Evidently the government thinks it's true... but then the gov't thinks lots of things are true that are not.
Very true. I think the legend got started when people got out of their vehicles with a phone and there was a spark. The spark, of course, was static electricity from sliding across the seat and out the door. I always ground myself when leaving the vehicle to pump gas, especially in the wintertime when static electricity build-up is much more severe.
