The very first time I towed our CRV we hit a section of road around Twin Falls where they were tarring and chipping the road. At only about 20 mph I had hundreds of rocks on the hood and the tray under the wipers when we got out of the construction zone. No damage because of the low speed, but 2-3 hours cleaning tar and rocks off the car.
I immediately bought the Roadmaster Tow Defender and installed it. We haven't had the same experience with newly tarred and chipped roads, but in over 1200 miles of towing, there are absolutely no rocks, chips or dings in the car. Because we're going to Alaska next summer, I also just bought a Roadmaster Guardian which I'll install before we leave. I'm very fussy about rocks chips and door dings in my cars, but I know many don't care. To me the expense is worth my peace of mind.
