As I mentioned above - I've seen vehicle overheating caused by them.
A protective screen can get clogged and cause overheating - but is easier to clean off than having to use high pressure water to wash the radiator fins from the engine side.
Lovebugs bodies can cause damage to paint on a vehicle. Modern paints and a good wax, or other protective coating - like the film mentioned - can prevent paint damage.
But can't prevent overheating and reduced vision.
