Pull Cord for Awning hidden

The last time I put away the RV I was in a hurry and the awning's pull cord got away from me and is now hidden within the rolled up awning. I can see the indentation of the cord under the awning, but can't quite reach it and can't seem to find a way to begin unrolling the awning so I can grab the pull cord. Any helpful hints would be appreciated. Who knew my haste would cause such an issue.
  • One of the handiest tools in the RVer's trick box - the awning rod!

X2, have done that many times.just flip the latch first :)
  • I'm glad to be tall. on my little TT the awning roll is only 9 ft off the ground and I'm 6 ft 6 ... I intentionally let the strap roll up in the awning, so it doesn't rub on the paint and leave black marks. I flip the unwinder lever and grab the awing roll where the strap should be, give it a twist the way it wants to unroll and out pops the strap.
  • I had one that did that to me all the time. once of trying to get it out was enough for me. I made a loop extender and now I no longer have that problem.
  • I always let the awning slap up against the trailer when putting away and the strap is always buried out of sight. I just grab an awning arm and pull it out a bit. Then I go to the other arm and pull out a bit. After the the second or third pull I can grab the strap and pull it down.
  • I stand in the doorway and reach up with my hands and unroll the awning till the strap shows.

  • I looped some rope over the end of the roller on each side and we both pulled. A couple of tow straps or similar will also work as would the pull/ladder method but a 3rd person to grab the strap would help as well. Be VERY careful on ladders, especially if you need to push/pull. It's very dangerous up there!
  • One person on each side of the awning pulling the arms down until you can see the strap. May need a ladder on each side to get high enough to get some leverage. And maybe a third person with the pull rod to grab the strap and pull it when it becomes visible. Got friends?
