Pulling through big cities

Wondering what people do when they have to pull their rigs through the bigger cities. Also is there a book or app. That has preferred routes to destinations. Just thinking driving certain places with a 5r or a TT isn't a lot of fun

  • We travel via interstate routes to reach our destination campground. The campground website usually will have driving directions that will get you there safely. If no, we call the campground and ask what is the best route to take to get to the campground safely. All this is done prior to leaving on the journey's day. We always plot our destination before we leave home or wherever we have spent the night.
  • I have done it but was as nervous as a cat on the tin room of a 4 story building. :)
  • An rv GPS may be your best bet for that. Otherwise, don't do it. Trees will get you every time.
  • We try to look at the map and study it a little before heading out...and we always try to stay in the next to the farthest lane... sometimes the one completely to the side turns into exits lane...and avoid hitting big cities with lots of traffic at peak times...
  • Avoid rush hour but otherwise it's usually not a big deal if you stick to the freeways.

A couple thoughts I keep in mind:
    - While I prefer to cruise at 55-60mph, I will pick up the pace a bit if I'm creating a backup.
    - If it's 3 or more lanes and traffic is light, I will cruise one lane to the left of the right lane so I can stay clear of ramp traffic. This avoids a lot of hard braking and then accelerating back up to speed as slow traffic merges in front of you and then takes off.
  • TT, 5-R or M/H with a toad....makes no difference. They are all monsters driving in big cities. I generally make sure that if there is a highway going through the city I try to stay in the middle lane. Easier for me. I also slow down and go about 2-4 mph below posted speed limit. If you get caught or have to drive in 2 lane city streets just make sure you take your time and make wide turns. Relax and don't let other drivers bother you. When you approach an intersection that you have to turn at think it through before you proceed. Take a few seconds before you hit the gas. Keep an eye on mirrors and you will be okay.

99% of the time when other drivers see a big beast in front of them trying to manouver they will hold back and let you make your needed turn or lane change. They key is to remain calm, relax and drive the beast.
  • We avoid them at all costs. There's just too many tight turns where one would have to take more than one lane and too many people slamming on brakes and jumping in front of you.
  • In the city most roads are straighter and there are less trees hanging over the road. I think is the same as the country roads only different.
