We're buying our first trailer (moving up from a pop-up) to be towed by a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe (V6 AWD). The Santa Fe specs are 5000 pound towing capacity, vehicle capacity of 1296 pounds, and maximum hitch weight of 500 pounds (all per the owner's manual). We're looking at a Palomino Solaire Expandable 163XD, with a curb weight of 3633 pounds, gross weight of 4950 (I've calculated that with propane, batteries and gear we'll probably be around 4500), and a dry hitch weight of 367.
Can't understand how you are trying to rationalize your calculations using dry hitch weight - which is from a brochure and most likely incorrect.
By your own estimate of Gross weight, you are going to be exceeding your receiver capacity as tongue weight is usually calculated by multiplying gross weight by at least 13%
4500 * 13% = 585. And since your estimating, it will likely be higher.
Does your Santa Fe have any limitations regarding a weight distributing hitch - can you use one on this vehicle? If so, have you considered the weight it will add? People usually add 100 lbs for calculations so subtract that from your payload weight if you do get it weighed.
I'd stick with the popup if you plan on keeping this TV. If not, then hope your engine can overcome the wind resistance from the front wall - which your currently not experiencing with the popup. If you don't have a trans cooler, I can't see how you can think you have a tow package. Good luck.
