I would like to thank everyone for your responses, although none (except the documented article) actually helps what I'm looking for. I was hoping folks would stay away from "opinion". I was looking for documented facts or first hand knowledge or experience for what I needed. (but that's the risk one takes on a public forum). I will say however, "first hand experience" in the fact no fires occurred to anyone or anyone someone "personally" knows, is also pretty compelling evidence that this subject is not as big a risk as some make it to be. So, in a way, I'd like to thank-you for YOUR first had experiences for those who leave the gas "on" also. I can use this information also.
I have seen several articles, news clips, and videos of gas station fires, especially caused by sparks filling gas cans in the back of pikc-up truck, type scenarios. That's really not what I was looking for. And the warning again cell phone usage and smoking cigarettes is all over the place (not what I was looking for though).
FYI, I'll leave all you folks to your imaginations which side of the fence I live on (to shut off or not to shut off). Apart from "warnings" based on everyone's responses, the "probability" of a gas station pump catching fire is just that ... "probability". (Russian Roulette maybe, but sounds like I have a better chance of experiencing a first hand a plane crash than a fuel pump explosion). I am not undermining "common sense" or "safety" in any way, or the possibility of endangering someone else's safety or property in any way. I'm just looking for "facts" in my research.
FYI, of all the subjects I've read about on this forum and other forums, I think this subject is truly the most "explosive" (to make a pun) and also the most opinionated.
Thanks again.

How much risk would you accept without worry, if I parked very close to you family car, maybe even blocking you and them in, and was bragging to everyone about my fridge, furnace, and water heater being on… that I was researching the risk and vulnerability of one of them kicking on and starting a fire while I was fueling…
Now here I would bet a dollar to a donut your opinion would not be very caviler, and wisely so…
I am also sure any known added risk is also known negligence if something happens, and your research here wouldn’t change a single mind about that negligence…
