Question to those towing an Equinox

I am about to start towing a 2011 Equinox. The manual says that it IS towable.

The manual says to run the Equinox engine for 5 minutes at the beginning and for 5 minutes at the end of each day and to run it at fuel stops.

The manual further states to:
1) Hook up to the RV
2) Turn the key to On/Run
3) Sift the transmission to Neutral
4) Turn the key to Accessory
5) Turn off all of the accessories
6) Pull fuse 32.

In the steps above, the manual implies that the engine is not running when performing steps 1, 2, 3.

IS THAT CORRECT?

The manual says at the end of the tow, to:
1) Set the brake
2) Shift to Park
3) Turn the key to Off
4) Reinstall Fuse 32
5) Start the engine and let it idle for 3 minutes before driving the car.

Is that what you do?

Thanks in advance. I just want to make sure that I've got this right.

Tim
  • My 2012 Equinox says run the motor for 5 minutes, which is what I always do while hooking up and doing your step 1,2,3. IF you've been driving the car just before hooking up that would count as the 5 minutes.

Perhaps I'm just paranoid from towing Hondas which did not want you to go directly from park to neutral, wanted you to shift from drive to neutral, while running. I do this same routine with my Equinox to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll watch out for a problem.

I plan to plug in the umbilical the last thing. IF there is a problem, I can easily go from the relay to a manual switch for opening the 32 fuse.

  • Reply to your second post. I had a switch to disable the fuse when I wanted to tow. There is something you can't do when that fuse is out. I do not remember whether you can't go to park or can't place the key in the off position. What you have done may cause you problems. I have not towed for two years and no longer have the car.

    Thanks Chevy,

I just wanted to make sure that the engine didn't have to be running to start the process.

I have added a relay so that the 32 fuse is opened when the umbilical from the RV is plugged in.

  • That's the procedure we use on our 2016. We installed a Roadmaster Fuselink rather than pulling the fuse each time. Tows like a champ.
