ram1500 5.7hemi

Just not real sure I have a28 ft tt and wght of6300# . Have I got enough truck plan on trip to california next year .:?
  • What year is your Ram? What axle ratio and cab configuration?
  • Hitch weight and your payload will be the big thing to look at. Other than that, the drive train should be fine.
  • Is the 6,300 weight including all the normal items you will be carrying on a trip or is that the weight as published or as it is sitting at a dealer before you out fit it. Need to add passengers and the weight of all the things they would bring as well.

Your set up is similar to mine (see sig line). I am at the max for mine.

You may be struggling to go up steep hills out west but okay elsewhere.

Yesterday I was towing mine north on 24 in Monteagle, TN, the tranny temps went from 160 to 210 on the top of the hill and I do have an external transmission cooler. This is something to remember as well including worrying about your weights.

Get your truck and trailer weighed too.
  • Guess I need to get the info togather before asking will get back to you guys as soon as I get it togather thanks
  • doesn't do much good just post the engine size and ask if that's enough to tow your trailer.
there's a lot more to towing than just engine size.

year, cab size, bed size, rear end ratio, 4x4 or 4x2, factory tow package or not, payload capacity, just to name a few things.

and more info on the trailer would help too.
like is that amount dry weight, UVW or GVWR?
  • I think more relevent questions are?
    1. How will the truck tow if you have to go up some mountains?
    2. How will te truck pull with 35 mph head and side winds?
    3. How much stress will the overall truck experience i.e. heating up, tranny, gas milage?
I am sure you are going to take your truck and trailer out for a test run before you take off to calif.
  • You have enough engine, don't know about the truck without more info. What is the trucks payload? Model and body style make a big difference to payload. Also what is the tongue weight of the trailer and how much weight for passengers and cargo do you plan to have in the truck?

Rams can have low payloads so all the above needs to be answered before knowing if you have enough truck. Just you and a passenger in a regular cab with 700lbs of tongue weight, no problem. A loaded crewcab with 4 adults, a bed full of gear and 1k of tongue weight = not enough truck.
