Rand Mcnally RV Tablet 80 maps not updating

Hi All,

I purchased this GPS unit in November 2015. I was able to update the maps early on, but attempts to update maps for the last few months have been unsuccessful.

I've called support, and the reason they give is that the "servers have been down".

I can understand that being a legitimate excuse for a few days, but not for months...

Has anyone else had this issue?

I also have the Rand McNally RVND 7725 LM gps unit which uses the dock software to update, and that has consistently worked just fine.

  • We were having issues with our 7725 for the last few weeks not updating. We called and we got the same excuse. Hubby went this morning to try again and it worked.

Maybe those serves are just really that bad.
  • Apparently there must be two separate services for updating maps because the RVT80 Tablet uses WIFI to connect directly to their servers while the other units like the 7725 use the docking software while connected to a computer through the USB cable.

I don't think they are using the same servers because my 7725 has always updated while at the same time the Rand McNally tech support is telling me my RVT80 Tablet gps won't update because the servers are down.

It's crazy because I just got my new Mortorhome magazine and there is a nice add in there for the RVT 80 Tablet GPS.

It makes me want to shout out to people to postpone buying this gps until Rand McNally gets their system fixed.

I just find it hard to believe they can go months without a solution to this problem, it makes no sense.
  • We attempted to get some information to determine if a review of the RV Tablet 80 was worthwhile. The feeling we got from them was that they didn't want any reviews of it. Looking at their Truckers Tablet unit (essentially the same thing), I think they aren't quite ready for primetime.
  • Well I don't like being negative, but without the ability to update maps I really don't think I could recommend the Rand McNally RVT80 tablet at this time.

I will say that I like the size of the screen.

If I had to do it over again I would consider getting a GPS dongle to attach to a tablet, and use the Delorme Earthmate app. It's a lot cheaper.

And even cheaper is the CoPilot Live software on a tablet! You can either use the standard software that has an Rv setting, or the trucker software with all the settings for a big vehicle!

I use Copilot Live for several years now, and have no problems what ever with it. I run it on my 10.1" Samsung Galaxy tablet.
