Rats are pretty fierce. There is a big, tough, unneutered tom cat in the neighborhood and he has not killed them off. Our cats (mine and the one who lives here) are good with mice, but not rats. They are interested, though, hence my concerns about traps and poison. The cats hang around the rat areas.
