Sounds like you need a GPS and maybe a smart phone too.
No one is saying you'll "never" need 5 gallons of fuel, but that story is not likely to happen again any time soon. Driving at night does have its challenges, so in the future you may want to be better prepared for finding fuel. And even if you install a 50 gallon auxiliary tank, there will still be reasons to plan if you do late-night driving.
Actually her smart phone has GPS and we were using that for the trip its self but she was using the Walmart app to find the nearest Walmart and that is how we missed it.
