Big deal about nothing.
As long as those LP tanks are tied down, they are by far safer than any full gas can in the back of a truck. I'll take an LP tank flying around on the interstate over gallons of gasoline any day.
And apparently few of you realize what is on the road around you everyday. Just two examples. Semi fuel tanks are completely exposed, and often leak after accidents. And many...many vehicles have gas tanks as the very rear of the car/SUV. Notably, a long generation of Jeep Grand's, recalled for exactly what I state and the Fed's claiming if there is a hitch installed...you're good!
I also used to carry 3 gallons of gas in a 5 gallon container on the back of my TT bumper. While I never found any laws restricting this, I was concerned a bit about going thru many tunnels on the East coast that did have specific restrictions and I still passed the criteria I was told by Virginia State Police. Still, I no longer carry it. It's not worth it.
