I had that "existence" issue as well. The SS administration did not have my name matched to my SS#. Seems when I registered, I spelled my name wrong. When they located me and pointed out the mistake to me, the next question was how to correct it. Seems I needed to have my birth certificate, a notarized document from someone who has known me at least 20 years and other criteria. I have made it to 70 with no problems so the error remains.
