I just removed all the equipment from our 2013 CRV and moved it to a much nicer, fresher 2014 we traded up to. So, I got to essentially do the install/removal process three times now. On the latest one, I did exactly as loggenrock describes. He does a great job of explaining how this is an "end of the world" install, and that there will be a lot of damage caused by the cable activating, but it's far from the worst problem you will be having, if you are so unlucky as to end up needing the device. The red box is bolted to a thick steel flange on the Blue Ox brand base plate. I also neatly zip tied the red cable loop to the top of an opening in the lower bumper cover, leaving it permanently concealed, but accessible. I grew tired of seeing two cables (ready brake and e-brake) sticking out of the front of the car. The other big change is that I went with portable, wireless LED taillights. I used the entire Readybrake towing system, and used it hard for 45K+ miles over the last few years. The system has a lot of wear showing, but the biggest issue was the lighting. I had constant issues with the female receptacle on the front of the car, and replaced two defective ones. I also had a taillight that got water logged, when the silicone sealing I did around the pathetic piece of garbage, aftermarket socket failed. I don't know how well the whole wireless system will work out, but I'm really tired of all the headaches that the old style, hard wired system created.
