With a Payload limit on a Ram 1500 of 1200 lbs minus 800 for the hitch, leaves 400 lbs for a tank of gas ~ 110 lbs and family of four.

I dont refute what you say, just curious why I see so many in the campgrounds and on the road.

They are frequently over the rating or they may have additional capacity with optional payload or trailering options added to the truck.

If you keep the trailer GVWR within your tow rating and don't load too much in the bed you will probably be fine. Upgrade the truck in a few years as money permits.
