Hello Everyone

I have a 2014 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi with a payload max of 1266 and trailer tow of 7750. I am interested in recommendations on

1.) Best Weight Distribution Hitches

2.) How I can increase my payload capacity?

Thanks!

  • Sell Ram 1500, Buy Ram 2500. You can change how the truck handles the weight weight, but not the ratings.

I highly recommend a WDH with integrated sway control. Equal-i-zer 4-pt, Reese Straight Line, and Blueox Swaypro all have very satisfied owners.

I am curious how/why I see scores of Ram 1500 towing 30'+ trailers which most have hitch weight of 750 - 850 lbs. You see Mom, Dad and 2 youngins jump out.

With a Payload limit on a Ram 1500 of 1200 lbs minus 800 for the hitch, leaves 400 lbs for a tank of gas ~ 110 lbs and family of four.

I dont refute what you say, just curious why I see so many in the campgrounds and on the road.
I don't know about your vehicle, but usually the payload number includes a 150 lbs driver and full tank of gas. So you don't need to "double count" those. You need to check your manual to see what the payload number already includes before you start adding up the numbers.

You are right about the many folks doing this. I think there is several reasons, the first being they are unaware of the limits. I am sure they don't realize, that it should handle better, and just think that's the way it is.

The second reason is the RV sales person said that truck will handle it just fine.

Rarely is the truck going to break, as most weekenders, just go a short distance.

  • Increasing payload capacity. --- There are several aftermarket add-ons, such as helper springs, Timbren SES, air bags, heavy duty shocks, etc, that may improve your ride comfort and take out some rear end sag.

NONE OF THEM will increase your payload capacity, there are no aftermarket mods that will do that.

Your suspension is not the only player involved. There's also the frame, axles, wheels, tires, brakes, etc.
  • Go for the Andersen. Its perfect for your cae. You will get excellent weigh distribution and it is much lighter than other solutions. I have one for 3 years now and 10000 miles towing. Highly recommended. Easy to install also.
