In certain states they pull oil burners over along the road to check. The dye they use can be found spectroscopically (i.e., not by eyeball, with an instrument) for months and after hundreds of gallons worth of dilutions. And the fines are breathtaking in the effort to make sure they get your attention as well as your resolution to never do that again.
