Reese Dual Cam Question

Will the 600 lb trunnion bars work well with the original style dual cam arms?

I know that the 600lb trunnions with the crooks will physically fit the dual cam arms but I also know that the 600 lb arms are physically thinner than the 1200 lb bars.

I guess I am asking if anyone with experience with the 600 lb trunnion hitch and dual cam can comment on the effectiveness of the DC system with the thinner arms.

Thanks!

Jeremiah

  • I used the Dual Cam with 1000lb round bars for about 7 years on both my previous trailer and present one until I purchased the Hensley about 5 or 6 years ago. It worked very well and I never had any indication of sway. I would certainly use the one you have instead of purchasing a new hitch!

  • I am running a trunnion style. I have had this setup since 05. I originally had the 800lb bars for a year and a half. then I bought the current trailer and have had the 1200lb bars ever since. never had an issue. this year I may flip the cams over as they have worn pretty well. when you flip them, at least on the HP model you can use the bottom side as a new surface. this will give me another 10 years before I need to think about buying new cams.
  • Thanks Dodge Guy, I have been skittish to try out my Dual Cam again, I used the cam adapters with a Husky Weight Distribution hitch only to have the trunnions pull out of the hitch head on my second trip with the DC.

Admittedly, I should have used a Reese Hitch so, looking back, I can't really blame the DC for that.

Do you run a Round Bar hitch with the DC or do you run the Trunnion style?

    Thanks!

  • IMO (and not because I own one) I would go with the DC. Those other hitches you mentioned are just glorified WD hitches.
  • Thanks for the comments,

I went and pulled my cam arms out of my shop. They really are in good condition.

I've been on the fence between the Andersen 'no sway' hitch, ordering a Reese hitch and run my Dual Cam sway control, and just ordering an Eaz-Lift and running a sway bar.

    Thanks,

  • The Dual Cam system is designed to work with a large number of weight bars which are interchangable and is very effective when properly installed and adjusted.
  • Yes it will work just fine. I had 800 lb trunnions bars with the "crooks" at the end. I now have 1200lb bars. I believe the DC is good all the way up to 16 or 1800lb bars.

With the lighter tongue weight trailer the effectiveness isn't as much as the heavier trailers, but in turn there is less mass to control so in the end the effectiveness is the same.
