Was there any damage to the trailer? And what did the dealer say about this? I would be raising hell right now. You may want to call Reese and let them know what happened. Send them the pictures, I'm sure they would like to look into how this happened.
No damage to the trailer. He was basically stationary at the time of the failure. Trailer tonge dropped, and the head held everything high enough the nothing else hit but the hitch head. Dealer had never seen anything like that, and replaced the head, shank, and ball with new, this time with a solid steel rather than cast.
I contacted Reese myself, both via e-mail and on the phone. They did not really seem concerned. In fact they did not even understand why I was calling since the dealer replaced everything. During the conversation Reese stated: "When there is a failure it typically happens at slow speeds during maneuvering". The person on the phone did not want to see photos, know any specifics about the conditions at the time of failure, no questions about what the trailer was, what the tow vehicle was, nothing. Heck I had to suggest that they might want to contact the dealer to possible get the broken shank send back to them.
