I am not familiar with the winterization kit. Sounds interesting.
A couple years ago I forgot to drain my HWT and we got a cold snap for a few days. I had a major mess when I launched the water pump and had a flood inside. Burst the HWT. cost me about 600 bucks for that mistake!!
I like the idea of what you outline here. And also a lot of the great ideas PianoTuna Don has suggested.
Might be awkward getting a Y to the tank, as it is under my sofa and difficult to get at. I could perhaps remove the sofa, plumb something in and attach to the wall or something. I'll have to check it out.
I too am surprised I don't have more issues with frozen lines. Just the kitchen feed and thats all. I'm going to get in there and re-route the lines in that spot, pulling them in closer to the inside. There is a block of wood screwed to the floor that the shore power cable box sits on. If I can bust that out of there, then I can pull the lines in to prevent freezing. There is room to move them. Might have to cut and shorten them a bit, but I have a pex and poly B crimper, if I can get it in there for the task. My pipes are all poly B, not pex. My sink area is ok, no freezing there.
I tried stuffing a chunk of insulation in the shore power cable box but it didn't help. The lines are under the box and right against the outside wall. Thats where the problem is. I have ice in places on my outside walls - LOL
It's nice that my pump is in the same place as the furnace and HWT. That really helps keeping it from freezing.
Throw enough propane at this thing and it is toasty warm in here. But I do have to avoid getting too close to the outside walls in my bed! A lot of cold emanating from there! God help me if my furnace ever quits!! I'll be hooped! This little 1500 watt heater helps but not that much!
Good idea on the reptile heater - thanks! One of those on the floor under the shore power cable box would likely fix the problem instead of re-routing the pipes.
