Something else that will help is to arrive at gas stations after the morning commuter rush as they are usually empty and so the end pumps are available and no other motorists are around to get in the way.
The Mavarik stations in the west are also usually built with larger bays but when they are busy it is still not great for filling up the tank.
We burn diesel so I will use gasbuddy.com to find locations of places selling diesel and have 2-3 in mind at a given town where I plan to stop for refueling. If one is not good for getting into then I will go to the next one and usually one of them is easy to access.
If I am passing a truck stop and still have half a tank I will pull in to get it when it is easy to do so. Less stress overall.
