I've always turned right, then drove on the shoulder to speed up, similar with a left turn, so people don't have to deal with a slow vehicle. However, I only see this now in the more rural parts of Texas. Same with waving... pickup trucks, people wave. However, most city dwellers have their own one-finger wave that has far eclipsed the old native Texan style.
