et2,
Of course your MH is much higher than a pullable and must be re-registered yearly because it's a motorized vehicle just like a car, pickup, or OTR truck and will be the same type $ value and unloaded weights classifications. In Michigan, vehicles are classified by charts for curb weight unloaded and NOT by how much you want the GVW to be licensed for and therefore no fines for being over your licensed GVW registered for.
Our last big class A Allegro MH was an average of about $400/yr over the 6 years we owned it for annual license registration. Higher when it was new and a lot less by the 6th year. Of course, the insurance that's required to license and drive it wasn't cheap as it goes by the year/value and what coverage you want or is mandated too. No smog or vehicle safety test required in Michigan either. Have it self-propelled (motorized) and pay the price! Simple as that!
Important because to register a motorized RV, you must have proof of insurance on it or no license plates can be had. Registration is only 1/2 of the registration process equasion. Ours were always cheaper to insure as we paid cash for them and had no secured note holders. Thus, our insurance carrier allowed them to be added on to the other vehicle's policy and get a very big additional multiple vehicle discount that comes into play with them for having 3+ vehicles insured under the one policy rather than and stand alone MH policy. Our pullable RV's and boats are extremely cheap to insure as they are all combined under our blanket combined policy with the homes, vehicles, RV's, and boats, and covers our other owned lands too with having full new replacement coverage.
Per our agent, you usually can't be in all the vehicles and/or other items and/or in the home at the same time and thus lowers the risk factor per insured item which lowers per item coverage costs. Common sense! We sure do know it works as we have had it for more than 30 yeras now and have saved 10's of thousands of $$$. Lesarned it back when owning the engineering business and still works with private property ownership with our carrier. So many different available plans/options in the insurance marketplace if you really check it out. It can save you bundles if you are smart.
Our 29' Carriage 5th wheel is $68/yr, the 11-1/2' Lance TC is $64/yr for example. I/O and outboard boats are similar. A mere fraction of RV and Boat normal policy costs. Lifetime registration for non-motorized wheeled pullables and no registration or license plates requred for TC or non-wheeled RV's but a title appication of ownership is required at time of purchase. State issued proof of ownership! Very wise and so cheap!
Have to really shop around as there are such huge differences in coverage and policy costs. Some other states may have different rules and laws. We found this out when owning property and boats in Florida and they love the stuff that's inside your wallet and have such high deductibles to add insult to injury!
In Michigan, a pullable RV or utility/boat trailer is NOT motorized and is very cheap to registered as it's a one time doing when purchased and good for as long as you own it. 10 years or 50 years and so is insurance very cheap on non-motorized wheeled RV's and other trailers too in Michigan. Not only money savings but time and driving down and standing in line. Now all can be done by mail or Internet in Michigan if desired so that's a help.
