I wanted to relocate to Georgia. Even had an accepted offer on a house THEN I was to find out what registering my MH, SUV, and toad would cost every year based on their combined value!! :E
Where I am from all my vehicles registrations are around $25.00. Including the MH.
Wish I would have known Georgia was working on changing that registration policy.
The change only effects new purchases. If you were to move to Georgia now, you'd still pay the excise tax on your vehicles.
However, any vehicle you buy new in Georgia would be charged the tax at the time of purchase, then you'd only pay the yearly $20 tag fee for each vehicle.
When you first move to Georgia, you will be charged a title transfer fee, I think that is like $12. Then on your next birthday, you will be charged the excise tax when you renew the registration.
If your vehicles are older, then the excise tax is not too bad. It's not based on the Blue Book value of your vehicle. On all my vehicles, the value the excise tax is based on is lower than the Blue Book value of my vehicles. We have a 1999 Ford Taurus. The excise tax last year was $14.
Also, in Georgia, every county has a different Millage rate. In my county, Glynn County, there is a different Millage rate depending on district.-Michael
Thank you. That makes me feel better on my decision not to live there based on the insane registration fees I would have had to pay! :C
Albiet I still think Georgia is THE nicest of the southern states.
