Regulations for towing

Hey all new to the forum..
I have had this question asked to me and asked myself. I even recieved an email from Ministry of Transport. Still I am confused.
Here is the body of the email from the MOT..
Carl:

I will try to answer your question on email, however, feel free to call me at the number below if you need more clarification.

With a truck with an MGVWR of 3000 kgs and a trailer with a MGVWR of 5000 kgs, you will definitely need annual inspection stickers on the truck and the trailer.

If the trailer and the boat together only weight 4300 kgs, then you will only need a G licence.

If the trailer weighs over 2800 kgs, (which according to the information it does), then you have to make sure that you have the truck registered for the weight of the truck and trailer combined. I am talking about the RGW on your permit. Example: If the truck weighs 3000 kgs and the trailer weighs 4300 kgs, then the RGW on your permit should be at least 7300 kgs. This will raise the amount that you pay for your validation sticker.

As for the truck pulling the trailer, there should not be an issue unless your truck weighs over 3000 kgs when it is hooked up and the truck was built after July 1, 2011. If this is the case, you need to look at the manufacturers axle ratings on the truck. If you are over either of the axle ratings on the truck (front or rear), then you will be overloaded as per Regulation 413 in the HTA. I have attached the section below:

Axle weight limits
34.1 (1) For the purposes of section 116 of the Act, if a non-designated vehicle or a vehicle that is part of a non-designated combination is manufactured after June 30, 2011, the weight on an axle unit shall not exceed the manufacturer’s gross axle weight rating if the manufacturer’s gross axle weight is less than the amount otherwise permitted by the Act and this Regulation.

I have traveled all over Ontario Camping and Moose hunting and I have never noticed a yellow safety sticker on a Trailer? I was under the impression that this was something of a commercial nature?
One question I have is..
I have a 2006 Titan weight rating 9400..Can I tow a enclosed trailer that has a weight rating of 10,000? I have no intention of ever being close to this weight but that is what the Trailer stamp has on it? Do i require and annual inspection on Both the trailer and truck?
I also Pull a 26ft Fifth wheel weight at 9000 lbs does this require an annual as well..Thanks all..

  • I asked our neighbour about the 'Yellow Sticker' on his Dodge Ram, used for pulling his 29' fifth wheel RV. Its NOT required for pulling an RV, but it is needed because he also tows a heavy duty flat bed trailer (farm and other equipment hauler). That trailer, heavy weight rating and possibly used for COMMERCIAL purposes does required the 'Yellow Sticker' and on going Annual safety Inspections.

If your Titan trailer is used for commercial purposes (or possibly could be used commercially), the Yellow Sticker (inspection) is required on both the truck and trailer, but not the fifth wheel (RV).

A lot of pickup trucks used exclusively for hauling a personal use RV will have a little red sticker on the licence plate indicating Personal Use (No Commercial).

  • It is Odd that I have never seen a trailer with a Yellow MOT sticker here..For sure if i do need one that is an inspection..

Doesn't this say you will need an inspection?
