removing the bunks

I put this question over on the DIY forum without much response so I'll try here if the mod will allow it. I'm thinking of buying a class c that has bunks beds. I don't want or need the bunks but I want the space for a recliner and maybe a small table. Has anyone removed the bunks for whatever reason and did it look ok after and was it difficult? Why not just buy a c with a chair you might ask. I have yet to find a c 31ft or under with this combo, dinette, sofa, and chair. You can get 2 of the three, but not all. thanks

  • It really depends on the model. I've seen some models with bunk beds that were easily removed without damage, and easily replaced (so the next owner would have the same functionality). Just took a screwdriver and two people to lift the bunks out. Other models, the beds, once out, are out permanently, so replacing them would require a remodel.

If length were not a factor for me, there are some 30-31 foot "C" floorplans that have two bunks by the master bedroom, and if those were removable, it would be an ideal spot for a desk/half-dinette and chair.
  • Check to see if the RV builder put any major items under the bottom bunk. We have had a couple of bunk rigs, one we looked at one time we liked, turned out to have the main electrical panel built in to the side of the bunk, a deal killer on that one. Lifted the bottom mattress and plywood and there were wires going everywhere .

Our current fifth wheel, by Rockwood, has a slide out bunk room where the bottom bunk is a thick mattress that sits on the floor and the top bunk is hinged to the back on the outside wall. It tilts up to about 45 degrees and locks in place. We bought it with the idea of some day putting a desk in there for an office, if and when out two young grandsons tire of camping with us. LOL
  • If they removed the bunk, these posts wouldn't be nearly as entertaining. :)
  • Hi Rich, of the models we've seen with bunks it appears that ... if you're handy ... one could modify and turn the space into whatever is necessary. It doesn't seem to me that the bunks are structural. However I would say that in my shopping for a bunk model I've seen two units where they've been removed. Sort of a turn off to find the model I'd been looking for only to see the owner has removed the bunks that are part of my search. So be careful about resale. .. consider a reinstall plan IMHO.
