Rent out personal toy hauler

Has anyone checked into renting out their rv or toy hauler? Is there special insurance required for doing this? How do you hold someone accountable for damages?

I have been thinking about renting out my trailer but these are a couple of the questions that I have been thinking about. Just seeing if it's worth it.

Thanks
  • On the insurance issue; when I used my condo in Branson for my personal use only, I had a regular insurance policy. When I put it in a nightly rental program I had to upgrade to a commercial insurance policy, about 20% higher than the personal policy. Check with your agent, he'll know. I really think that will be your biggest issue, you just want to be covered in the event a renter has a serious accident. You might check with the people who rent RV's for a living and get a copy of their contract.
You will probably want to get set up to accept credit cards for payment, plus you can use the card as a backup for damage. Lots to think about but it can be done.
  • If you decide to rent it out, let us know how it worked and if you had any problems.
I'm guessing it would become a commercial operation, subject to the rules and regulations of a business.
I don't let anyone use our RV, there's too many things that can go wrong.
Some may tell you they have done it with few problems. There is no way I would lend/rent our RV to anyone, including friends and family.

    ....ditto......

  • You should be concerned about insurance issues...at the very least, ask your insurance agent what would and would not be covered. I suspect this may be commercial use and a typical RV insurance policy would not cover it. (Even if it were covered, you would most likely be ultimately responsible and your insurance would take the hit, with the corresponding possible rate increases and so forth, if something were to happen.)

You should probably also be somewhat concerned with registration and taxation issues...the state may not see this as personal use, and possibly not permissible under a normal RV registration—just another thing to research and consider.

You can hold people accountable for damage by requiring that they have insurance covering their liability and damage to your property, and naming you as an additional insured. Obtaining such insurance might be a tricky proposition for your renters. You could also require a damage deposit.

All in all, I don't think it's something that's worth attempting on your own. There may be some companies that facilitate private party RV rentals, along the lines of RelayRides and similar for cars, that would have at least some of the thorny legal matters worked out already.
